On October 6, 2012 I found Thor's journal among my family history papers.

It was a journal of a 700 mile hiking trip he took in Finnmark in northern Norway in the summer of 1941. He met a woman during his hike and they fell in love. They were to be married in October 1941.

On October 6 he died - two weeks before he was to be married.

His journey inspired me to go on my own journey, to retrace his steps, back 76 years in order to figure out what really happened.

Why did he move to Hammerfest - a small fishing village 284 miles from the arctic circle? What happened to him?

Thor Einar Jensen 1904-1941, my great-uncle, died under mysterious circumstances during the evening of October 6, 1941. The curious coincidence of finding the journal on the anniversary of his death, led me to undertake this project.

I am leaving for Norway on June 12, 2017 -  let the adventure begin.

This is the first page of a 15 page diary detailing his 3 week hiking trip through Finnmark, the northernmost county in Norway. I will be posting some translated sections soon.

The entire trip, including food, lodging and transportation cost $1,500 (a lot of money when your annual salary was $22,000)
