Thor Einar Jensen

Thor Einar Jensen

Thor was a banker, painter, an academic and an adventurer. He moved to Hammerfest in 1941 and embarked on a 3-week hiking trip in the summer of 1941. On October 6, 2012, I found Thor's journal of his trip among my family history papers.  It was a 16-page, detailed journal of his 700-mile hiking trip in Finnmark in northern Norway. He met a woman during his hike and they fell in love. They were to be married in October 1941.

On October 6, 1941, he died - two weeks before he was to be married. There are no records as to the cause of death.

His journey inspired me to go on my own journey, to retrace his steps, back 70+ years in order to figure out what really happened.

Why did he move to Hammerfest - a small fishing village 600 miles above the arctic circle? How did he die? Was he a member of the Norwegian Resistance? Was he murdered by the Nazis?

Thor Einar Jensen 1904-1941, my great-uncle, died under mysterious circumstances during the evening of October 6, 1941. The curious coincidence of finding the journal on the anniversary of his death led me to undertake this project.

Although I found the journal in 2012, it took me until 2017 to get started on my journey. The journey continues.
