This section provides further information into each of the cities that frame Thor's life. He was born in Oslo, died in Hammerfest and the other cities may hold some clues as to what happened to him.
Thor was born in Oslo (known as Kristiania until 1925) in 1904. He lived with his older brother Sverre (my grandfather) and his parents in a grand home until 1911 when his father died at the age of 37 of either pneumonia or blood poisoning. His mother, HIlda, had to sell the house and move into an apartment where she made a living sewing men's ties.
Thor received an internship with Norges Bank to work in Hamburg, Germany at the M.M.Warburg & Co. Bank, in 1928 (when he was 24 years old). Later, he would easily pass the translator's examination in German/Norwegian.
Hamburg, Germany (The Kaiser WIlhelm Strase, 1906)
Hammerfest is the northernmost town in the world. It is approx. 1200 miles (1800 km.) north of Oslo. Thor was offered and accepted the position of Bank Manager at Norges Bank in late 1940. According to letters I have, he took a train and boat headed to Hammerfest in January 1941. The ship that contained all of his furniture and other items was bombed on route and sunk. He started his job January 4, 1941.
